"Sweet Dreams" - Eurhythmics
Something about this song gets me every time. It's so unique and iconic, through and through. It's not the fanciest song and I would guess that it didn't take very long to write. There's basically one verse that's repeated over and over with two other small choruses thrown in occasionally. If you're looking for a song that you can sing along to and really get into the lyrics, this is not the song for you. It's very simple, but I think that's part of the beauty. It's a song that you don't have to think too much about or take too seriously. Pretty much all the music that is in the song (that isn't the vocals) is made up of synthesizers, which gives it a very modern feel. There is a constant, driving baseline embedded within the synthesizers that keeps the song moving along. Lead singer Annie Lennox has a voice has a lower register than you would expect and I think it does a really good job of fitting with the tone of the song. It's warm and full and doesn't get lost in all the background electronics. In the middle there is a instrumental (but with synthesizers instead of instruments) section that breaks up the verses a little bit and gives the song a little more depth, which is a good relief because if it wasn't there then the song would be very plain. I think that this is a good song that you can put on in the background of a club or party when you want to have a fun vibe but you don't necessarily need to pay attention to what you're listening to.
You had some great insights in your post, thanks for sharing. It's definitely a song that is recognizable almost instantly. The music video is definitely odd, but I guess most music videos are, right? Crazy how just two people were behind this song, when it really sounds like a whole production. It has a cool vibe.
