"The Sun Didn't Shine" - The Golden Gate Quartet

This song has a really good bounce to it. For some reason, the singers in the background remind me of a train. I couldn't tell you specifically why I think that, but there's something about it that I can't put into words that makes me think of a train. But, regardless, this song is a fun one. I can just picture the quartet huddled together in the recording studio just jamming away & bouncing a little on their feet to the beat. I really like all the harmonies that are present in the background. I also think it's fun how the singers react off each other and support the main idea of the song, while still having fun in the background doing their own thing. The song is a capella so there's extra emphasis on the vocals. I think this was a smart choice because it really lets the singers do their job and set the tone for how they want the song to go. They can take it wherever they want, and they do a really good job. This song is definitely a part of the "sacred" category that we talked about in class; the lyrics are all about Christ being crucified. In a way, the tone of the song does not match the lyrics at all. If you didn't know the words, I would bet that you would think it was about something fun and upbeat. But the lyrics are not like that at all, which seems a bit odd but it somehow still works.

  2. I like how you described what you pictured as you listened to the song. Also how you mentioned the singers reacting off each other because it's an a capella. You said it perfectly tho I would have thought it was a fun upbeat song, but the lyrics were about Christ which was different and a bit odd but I also agree it somehow worked out!

  3. I listened to this song with the train sound in mind and I totally get it! I can't really describe the whole idea either but at one point, a voice is a little higher than the rest and kind of fades which reminds of me the whistle on a train. I liked how you said it's a bouncy song because I can imagine all the singers crowding around the mic bouncing up and down and I don't know how they got away with not snapping their fingers to the beat, because I feel like it would seem so natural. It makes me want to!
